There have been many discussions in the world of veterinary medicine about pet vaccinations. Vaccinations for dogs and cats are at the forefront of many heated debates between veterinarians. The debates stem from the issue of the frequency of vaccinations in a pet. It is true that pets often encounter and contract illnesses and that many of these illnesses can be avoided by vaccinating your pet. However, some veterinarians and new veterinary studies have shown that there are as many risks to not vaccinating an animal often enough as there are in vaccinating too frequently. The answer to this dilemma lies in the species of the animal and the type of lifestyle it leads.
The problems with pet vaccinations have been addressed by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in the following way: vets that are certified by the AAHA vaccinate according to species and lifestyle. For example, if you have a cat that is an indoor cat who never comes into contact with any animal other than those living in you home, he may not need to be vaccinated as often as cats who are strictly outside pets or pets who live with other animals that travel frequently. If you have a dog that goes to a doggy daycare or to a groomer frequently, he may need frequent vaccinations to counteract what he could come into contact with at these places. The frequency of vaccination is ultimately up to your vet, so be sure to tell your vet about your pet’s lifestyle and the lifestyles of all pets in your home. Keep in mind that not all vets are certified by the AAHA; if your vet is not, then he may choose a different vaccination plan for your pet.
Some pet supply websites sell pet vaccinations. For low cost pet vaccinations, you can search the internet for suppliers. Keep in mind, however, that low cost pet vaccinations that you administer yourself can be tricky. It is always better to have your vet do the vaccinations. Discount pet vaccinations may seem like a good idea for someone who cannot afford vaccination fees, but as it can be dangerous for your pet, a better option is to find a facility that offers free pet vaccinations. Some pet stores do this, so check for one in your area. If this service is not available in your area, consult you vet about a payment plan.
