When you are looking for an automatic dog door – or cat door – be sure to research thoroughly and know where you want to put the automatic dog door: patio, porch, garage door, wall, window, storm door, or glass door. Automatic dog doors – and cat doors – are designed differently for different sized pets and different placements. For example, if you are planning to use an automatic doggy door for both a dog and a cat, size the door to the larger animal. If you want to put the automatic pet door in a glass door, be sure to buy one designed for glass door installation.
Automatic pet doors work with an automatic door sensor of some sort. There are two basic types of sensors: infrared and magnetic. Both of these work essentially the same way in that they are actuators for automatic door openers. A pet door that is an automatic door locks when it is not in use. When the pet wearing the collar with the magnetic or infrared sensor approaches, the door opens, and then locks behind him.
Some automatic pet doors allow access in only one direction. This means that the pet can only go in or out, and not back again. These are usually used for households that have one pet that does not go outside. There are also automatic pet doors that allow access both into and out of the house. An automatic door distributor like Stanley automatic doors will have different types of doors.
Very few automatic pet door manufacturers make sliding automatic doors for pets. At the time of this writing, the only available model was the Solo Automatic pet door. This door slides up into the frame of the door when the pet approaches and then slides back into place and locks when the pet is gone. It works on a rope and pulley system, so there is no force when the door comes down. .
