Pet Loss

In a pet-lover’s life, nothing is as painful as pet loss. The loss of a pet can be comparable to the loss of a human family member – and, in many ways, you have lost a family member. The biggest question is how to cope with the loss of a pet. This is an important question whether you are the one who has lost a pet or you are providing pet loss support to a friend or loved one.

The death of a pet can be very heart wrenching, especially for children, and pet loss can be the first way a child learns about death. How you choose to handle pet loss with a child is up to you. Adults are a little easier because they understand about death already. However, that doesn’t mean that it is any easier for an adult to lose a beloved pet.

Pet loss sympathy cards are sold at most card shops and can be very helpful to someone dealing with the death of a pet. Loss of pet ecards are often available on free greeting card websites, and can be just as thoughtful as a regular card. Pet loss poetry can also be found in books for coping with pet loss. Poems are often very soothing and reassuring for people who are coping with hardships. Whether you find free e-cards for pet loss or a poem of pet loss, the person who receives your sentiments for the loss of a pet will know that your care and are there to support them. Some people choose to give a pet loss sympathy gift, and this is perfectly fine, but usually not necessary. An important thing to remember is that when someone loses a pet, often they do not want to think about replacing that pet for a long time – at least until they have healed emotionally.

If you are the one who has lost a pet, there are many pet loss services available to you. Ask you vet to recommend a pet loss support group. Sometimes being with others who are experiencing the same situation can be comforting. Until you feel ready and are over your grief, try not to think about replacing your pet. Take as much time to grieve as you need – there is no correct amount of grieving time. Some people look at pictures of their pet and some cannot; this is completely up to you, too.
